Approximately 10 million children in the United States have some form of chronic illness (Clements, Copeland, & Loftus, 1990). The family/primary caregiver (PCG) of these children is often left to cope alone, leading to burnout and role-related stresses (Donnelly, 1993). The primary purpose of,, this experimental pilot study was to examine the effectiveness of self-applied relaxation techniques on the state anxiety level of adult PCGs of a chronically ill child. This study asked: What effect will an educational program about self-applied relaxation techniques have on state anxiety of primary caregivers of children with a chronic illness?
