When a group made up of Northeastern University professors and law students and of partners from the Boston law firm of Hale & Dorr gathered for a weekend retreat last fall, most were wary. Participants used to encountering each other in a lecture hall or in a job interview were now being put through team-building drills like the "high ropes" exercise: Each person crossed a log suspended three stories above the ground while connected by a rope to two colleagues below who held the rope taut in case the participant lost her footing.
