The mass market home fragrance category is suffering as consumers reeling from economic shocks scale back their home goods purchases. With pundits debating whether consumer purchasing behavior is undergoing "permanent" change, the outlook for the category in the near term is uncertain.

Last year, market researcher Packaged Facts Inc. projected that total home fragrance sales would achieve a 3% annual growth rate in the period 2007 to 2012, enabling it to reach $6 billion in 2012. That projection seems likely to be revised.
