NEW YORK -- The last year has seen pressure unmatched for decades on retail chain executives. A recession that began in the United States but quickly became global has created enormous challenges even for successful companies accustomed to steady growth.
Nevertheless, in view of the resulting turmoil there is remarkable continuity between last year and this in the group of executives highlighted for their influence within the industry. Retirement has removed a few faces, but very few of the retailers represented on these pages have made leadership changes related to performance.
