With collages hung on walls and also leaning against paintings on the floor at Bill Hodges, a small retrospective of works on paper from Benny Andrews's 40-year career resembled an artist's studio. One could imagine Andrews examining a work as he reconfigured cloth, paper and oil paint to arrive at a finished composition. The individual qualities of each collage prevailed over adherence to chronology or the coherence of a series; such curatorial concerns may be left for the inevitable full-scale museum retrospective.
