UNESCO this week added the hydraulic water system at Shushtar to its World Heritage List of almost 900 sites of "outstanding universal value."
UNESCO called the Shushtar water system, which can be traced back to Darius the Great in the Fifth Century BCE, "a masterpiece of creative genius."
The man-made system of waterfalls and water delivery aqueducts are located near the Elamite capital city of Susa in Khuzestan province. Construction began in the Achaemenid era (550-331 BCE), but the huge system visible today dates mainly from the early years of the Sassanid Dynasty (224-651 CE). Many waterwheels were added during the Safavid Dynasty (1501-1722 CE).
