Feb. 12--Long Island-based software giant Computer Associates yesterday proposed a $9 billion merger with a California company that would create a behemoth powerful enough to take on IBM.
The company's offer to buy El Segundo-based Computer Sciences would be the second-largest computer merger in history after Compaq' landmark acquisition deal with Digital Equipment last month for $9.6 billion.
Combined, the new company would employ 50,000 people and boast sales exceeding $11 billion.
