Basilea Pharmaceutica Ltd. recently announced that it has commenced a phase 3 trial of alitretinoin for the treatment of severe chronic hand eczema. This trial, entitled the HANDEL trial (HAND Eczema research of alitretinoin), is a multicentered, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical study to evaluate the safety and efficacy of alitretinoin in patients with severe chronic hand eczema in the United States. Alitretinoin has already been approved in Europe for severe chronic hand eczema that has been refractory to standard topical steroids.
