With increasing use of implantable devices for cardiac disease and joint disease, questions arise as to whether a contact allergy to an implanted metal could cause dermatitis, joint pain, or other symptoms in an affected patient.
Two situations faced by dermatologists at the Mayo Clinic:
(1.) How to evaluate a patient with a history of metal allergies prior to device implantation?
(2.) How to identify the allergen when a patient has a persistent rash or joint pain over the site of an implant?
