Mathematical programming is arguably one of the most important analytic techniques in the industrial engineer's arsenal. Companies and organizations, feeling the pinch of heightened competition and ever tighter budgets, are all trying to 'optimize' their operations. Although the interpretation of the term depends strongly on the person to whom you are talking, it usually is intended to mean getting the most for the amount of resources available.
