Indications are that substantially fewer young people are now entering the labor force in the United States. In dramatic contrast to the late 1970s when three million new 18 year-olds entered the work force each year, the labor force is now projected to increase at a slower rate than at any time since the 1930s.(1) In addition to having a significant impact on national productivity, these demographic changes are likely to create substantial competition among public and private organizations for competent new employees.(2)
