Energy costs have also been blamed for the performance of some South African cement stocks, although the fact that South Africa has entered recession has played some part in falling demand.
Pretoria Portland Cement, which is the biggest cement producer in Africa, has warned that demand across Southern Africa may decline by 10% during 2009, as higher coal prices drove up costs for several months, although weaker demand from Western Europe has recently depressed South African coal prices.
