Brazilian steel company Votorantim Metais, owner of Colombia's Acerias Paz del Rio (APR) steel factory, wants the Carare railroad to transport 6Mt/y of coal from Colombia's central region to Caribbean ports.

"However, this is not a short-term project and I do not think the railway will be capable of what Votorantim wants for at least five more years," the executive director of the Colombian coal producers federation Fenalcarbon in Boyaca department, Luis Gabriel Chiquillo, told BNamericas.

The railway needs an investment of US$1.2bn and there are still obstacles that must be taken care of between Cesar department and Caribbean ...
