In terms of numbers of shipyard workers employed and dollars spent, the U.S. Navy is U.S. shipbuilding's biggest customer. Most of its dollars go to just six shipyards owned by two giant defense defense contractors, Northrop Grumman and General Dynamics. Of the six, only GD's NASSCO has any commercial orders. These are a series of 49,900 dwt Jones Act products tankers on order for USS Products Tankers. That company is a joint venture of United States Shipping Partners (which filed for Chapter 11 protection in April) and the Blackstone Group. Where that leaves the NASSCO products tanker project, beyond the four ships currently on the books, remains an interesting question.
