Rudyard Kipling wrote, "The wildest dreams of Kew are facts of life in Kathmandu" and, until nearly 50 years ago, the legendary kingdom of Nepal was off limits to all but a few officially approved visitors. Within human memory, the first cars were carried to Kathmandu, Nepal's capital, on the backs of (many) human porters, and the first hotels were converted from vast, rambling palaces formerly owned by the Ranas, an extended family which, for more than a century, ran the country like a private corporation.
