DALLAS--Calling New Mexico lawmakers "irresponsible" in putting together the state's fiscal 1999 budget, Gov. Gary Johnson said Tuesday he may force the Legislature to take another crack at it in a special session he could call sometime next week.
Speaking before a business luncheon in Albuquerque, Johnson gave his first hint since the Legislature adjourned Feb. 19 that he might veto the $3.17 billion general fund budget passed by lawmakers, and call them back to a special session, possibly by April 1.
After the 30-day session ended, Johnson called the budget "overspent and unacceptable," but declined further comment.
