The tea industry in Brazil has been in the process of restructuring its profile after years of troubled times. Since the early 1990s, a series of events including unfavorable weather conditions, the drop in world prices due to oversupply, and the economic reforms of the "Real Plan" in 1994 (which overvalued the Brazilian currency by about 15%) produced a drastic decline in tea production and exports.
