NEW YORK -- Two top-drawer men's wear heavyweights duked it out with assorted high rollers Thursday at Sotheby's for a piece of history.
At the auction of the Duke of Windsor's wardrobe, Ciro Paone of Kiton and Joe Barrato of Brioni went head to head with anonymous bidders on apparel items that ranged from a morning coat and trousers to threadbare velvet slippers.
Kiton CEO Ciro Paone, who had a nephew bidding for him, bought 11 lots, including the morning suit the Duke wore on his wedding day, which fetched $27,600 against a high estimate of $15,000.
