It is quite natural for young children to explore their environment through movement. However, when children enter school, there are fewer and fewer opportunities for them to integrate movement and physical sensing as part of the learning process. This is quite unfortunate. Brain researchers have observed that physical movement is important to learning (Restak 1979). In his theory of multiple intelligences, Gardner (1983) has identified bodily-kinesthetic intelligence as one of at least seven human intelligences. Neurological evidence suggests a firm union between the mind and body; "we literally think with our bodies" (Seitz 1993, 52).
