One of the most difficult tasks in teaching any kind of science is teaching the scientific method itself. Rather than providing a series of steps to be memorized, teachers can show students how scientific techniques can be used in everyday life. Once such concepts are made clear by example, theoretical discussions of these methods become more sensible to the students.
To interest students in the practical applications of the scientific method, a teacher should design an investigation that allows general participation. It must also be inexpensive, use readily available materials, be safe to perform--and be fun! One such investigation is a paper towel "race." ...
