NEW YORK -- Consolidation in the innerwear industry continued at full speed last week with the announcement that Sara Lee Corp. plans to acquire Strouse, Adler & Co.
A 137-year-old firm that's known for its shapewear and specialty bras, Strouse, Adler -- small in comparison, with a volume of about $30 million -- will bring another dimension to the huge innerwear holdings of Sara Lee, which focuses on everyday bras in basic and fashion styles. In its latest fiscal year ended June 28, 1997, Sara Lee claimed a 29 percent dollar share of the $3.8 billion U.S. bra market.
