This book combines ethnographic and archival sources to document one Mexican Indian pueblo's historical transformation into a rural Mexican town. A double irony distinguishes the tale: first, the town originated in 1591, when Spaniards resettled fifty 'civilized' (i.e., agriculturalist) Tlaxcalan Indian families from Central Mexico at San Miguel Mexquitic in the state of San Luis Potosi in north-central Mexico.
