Thousands of times every day, humans pit their wits against machines. Most of the time they lose. Arcade games, bridge programs, chess machines: the phenomenon is so familiar we no longer notice it. We have grown accustomed to being outclassed by electronic gadgets in many activities we find intellectually demanding.
