In the new space movie Contact, Jodie Foster plays an idealistic astronomer engaged in the search for alien fife. Orphaned at an early age, Ellie Arroway finds consolation in the study of the planets and stars. She joins SETI (the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence), and after a series of conflicts with higher authority establishes an array of radiotelescopes in New Mexico, which are trained on remote regions of the heavens, ready to detect any intelligible signals.
