DESPITE Scotland boasting an impressive list of statesmen, thinkers and inventors, the nation has only ever won two Nobel Prizes.
One went to Sir Alexander Fleming, the man who created penicillin, while the other went to Sir James Black.
Now aged 85, Sir James is responsible for the invention of beta-blockers, used around the world in the treatment of heart problems. He also made giant steps in developing the first effective drug treatment for stomach ulcers which previously needed complicated and dangerous surgery.
