Banking has come to Antarctica.
The world's seventh continent, so frigid and remote that its chief native inhabitants are penguins and seals, has just seen the installation of its second Wells Fargo & Co. automated teller machine. Both are at McMurdo Station, a scientific research post well south of New Zealand, on the coast of the vast land mass.
The ATMs are part of MasterCard International's Cirrus network, which uses Earth-orbiting satellites to beam transaction information between the machines and the bank. The same technology has enabled the installation of ATMs in other remote locations, including cruise ships.
