A few million lakes of every size and shape not the map of Canada. Most of them were gouged out of Precambrian basalt by long-gone glaciers; others are little more than basins of water trapped in high mountain ranges. Still more are manmade reservoirs designed to store water for thirsty cities and generate inexpensive electricity.

Only a relatively small number of these lakes lie within ready access of Canada's extensive network of roads. The vast majority glitter in the remote hinterlands of the country, where only the drone of a floatplane or the dip of a paddle disturbs the tranquility.
