It's not the best of all possible worlds out there for those in the tourism business -- hotel bookings are slow and behind last year, gross receipts and lodgers tax revenues are off and layoffs are not uncommon -- but on the other hand, things could be much worse.

"The lodging business is doing OK" this summer of 2009, but "we're not setting the woods on fire," said Keith Toler, executive director of the city's Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Making it hard to figure out how room sales are doing is that many visitors now book rooms at the last minute.
