In this essay I will explore the complex relationship between body and self by reviewing four contemporary books which approach this topic in very different ways. The first part of the review is devoted to The Body and the Self, a collection of papers which originated in a joint philosophy and psychology workshop on the relation between spatial cognition and self-consciousness. The contributors examine the ways in which awareness of the body can provide the basis for awareness of the self in relation to the environment.
