The aspiration, sometimes desparate, of contemporary Turkish literature is to achieve recognition abroad, mainly in the Western world and above all in the English-speaking world. To that end, no effort is spared to translate into English some of the best work of both prominent and promising writers and poets. Turkey's splendid literary journal Nar, published every two months, has performed an admirable service by devoting its first issue of 1996 to English translations of recent world-class Turkish poetry and fiction.
