ON the west side of Harris in the Outer Hebrides, where I spent 12 memorable years, there is a lovely little township called Seilebost - by the blue Atlantic and great golden sands, with a little school and a tiny church and a robust, rustic football pitch.
Many are the delights of this sceptred shore. But a decade ago it boasted a big cat. It was large. It was elusive. And it rapidly acquired a near-supernatural reputation.
I never saw the brute myself - nor, come to think of it, did I meet anyone who had. But everyone seemed to know a friend of a friend who had personally glimpsed the Creature from the Pit and counted ...
