Have you ever felt momentary aversion at being interrupted by a student's knock on your office door or by a student's phone call while you were immersed in the contemplation of your research?(1) Or have you ever wanted to put the following in your class syllabus: Office Hours: None; Office Phone: Unlisted?
If you have, you may be interested in the findings of our experiment. It suggests teaching practices that may enable you to maintain the desired level of contact with students while, at the same time, allowing you greater flexibility in assembling blocks of uninterrupted time.
