During its fall term, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear two Florida cases in which juveniles were convicted to life sentences for crimes that did not involve a homicide. The Washington Post reported that in one case, a 13-year-old was convicted of raping a 72-year old woman. The offender, now 33, is being represented by Bryan A. Stevenson of the Equal Justice Initiative, who said the case is "freakishly rare." Only two people nationwide convicted at age 13 are serving life-without-parole sentences, Stevenson said.
