Two years ago the practical nursing program for the Portsmouth Public Schools in Portsmouth, Virginia, graduated only six students. It wasn't the first time that the school year began with a full class of 20 and then dropped off to single digits. Portsmouth's five-instructor faculty found that students simply were not motivated or inspired enough to get through all the preliminary, and sometimes burdensome, theory leading to the more hands-on postsecondary practical nursing program. The theory component includes their basic nursing knowledge and skills, such as anatomy and physiology, nutrition and patient relationships.
