Supermarket operators are aggressively expanding in the Czech republic, particularly in the discount and convenience store segments. UK-based TESCO PLC, German retailer REWE GROUP and ZABKA--a convenience chain with operations in Poland--are leading the Czech expansion. The push for opening small-format and discount stores and expanding beyond larger cities signify another stage in the evolution of the Czech retail market, the most crowded in Central and Eastern Europe. In January, the country had nearly 23 "hypermarkets" per one million inhabitants, compare with eight hypermarkets per one million people in Poland, according to INCOMA GFK, reported The Wall Street Journal ...
