Supermarket operators are aggressively expanding in the Czech republic, particularly in the discount and convenience store segments. UK-based TESCO PLC, German retailer REWE GROUP and ZABKA--a convenience chain with operations in Poland--are leading the Czech expansion. The push for opening small-format and discount stores and expanding beyond larger cities signify another stage in the evolution of the Czech retail market, the most crowded in Central and Eastern Europe.
