Students develop mathematical power when they are able to acknowledge, use, and assess the mathematics they encounter in their daily lives. An awareness of mathematics in the world in which one lives provides opportunities for building confidence, enhancing self-esteem, and stimulating creativity. In communicating to students about mathematics and their world, I frequently use the phrase "environmental mathematics." Environmental mathematics is that world of mathematics that surrounds us each day.
