One summer, while nature photographer Frans Landing was traveling the northwest coast of North America, a Kwakiutl elder took him to a sacred cave.
Long ago, the elder said, all the animals in the world were the same. Though they looked different on the outside, the animals shared a common language. They used to come together to this cave to celebrate their unity -- and before entering, they would shed their different skins. But one day, the animals were surprised in their cave by a nosy human. Never since have they revealed their true unity in that way.
