Time after time, a little chipmunk would fill its cheeks to bulging with sunflower seeds I had spilled on the deck at my cottage in Charlottesville.
It never ate a bite, but scampered off with its cache to an underground den somewhere close by. Once the chipmunk even managed to climb to the deck railing to find a few more seeds that had fallen from the bird feeder when I filled it. It didn't miss a trick.
It was fun to be only a few hours away from home, but able to observe close up wildlife that I never see down here. I felt the same way last spring when I watched a groundhog perch alertly around a burrow it had dug in that same Charlottesville ...
