Following the publication of Duval and Wicklund's (1972) landmark book documenting the pervasive impact of self-focus on behavior, psychological research on self-attention and self-regulation processes escalated rapidly (e.g., Carver & Scheier, 1981). The construct of self-attention or self-focus now permeates a vast range of research topics in social and personality psychology (for a review, see Gibbons, 1990) and psychopathology, most notably alcoholism, anxiety-related disorders, and depression (for a review, see Ingram, 1990).
