Two months ago, in the best performance of her young career, Oregon sophomore Melissa Gergel cleared 14 feet, 2 inches to win the Pac-10 Conference championship in the pole vault.
Thursday afternoon, as the sun beat down on Hayward Field, Gergel was faced with an equally difficult challenge, as she did her best to teach kids how to get over a mat-high bar in the high jump.
"It was a little tricky," Gergel said with a laugh. "I'm not a high jumper."
It was doubtful anyone cared.
