One of the most colorful Wisconsin pioneers was the wealthy Hungarian nobleman Agoston Haraszthy, who founded Sauk City and started the California wine industry.
Haraszthy left his homeland in 1840 to seek greener pastures in America. After traveling widely around the United States, he landed on Sauk Prairie in 1841. Here he laid out streets, constructed houses, set up a saw mill, built a brick yard, and imported a steamboat. Within months, 270 people had settled at "Haraszthy Town" (later renamed Sauk City).
