New French government raising hackles in Bonn
When French Socialist Prime Minister Lionel Jospin met Chancellor Helmut Kohl in late August, a statement issued by the Bonn government spokesman did not even mention that one of the main subjects under discussion was the restructuring of the European aerospace industry. So marginal were the concrete results.
Kohl had told Jospin in blunt language that Germany "needs to know" whether Airbus Industrie should become a single corporate entity capable of competing with Boeing, "or not".
