Apr. 7--Imagine what would happen if someone added 20 lanes to Lake Otis Parkway and Tudor Road at the height of rush hour.
That's almost exactly what is about to happen in communications as the state's first fiber-optic cable between Anchorage and Fairbanks readies for business.
In the way that more lanes speed traffic, the new cable will expand by 10 times the current voice and data capacity between the two cities, according to Jim Miner, a vice president for Alaska Fiber Star, the name of the 350-mile cable project.
