If you're lucky enough to live or work where there's real competition, you might see new local loop offerings soon. Otherwise, forget it.
If you think 1998 will bring major changes to the local loop, think again: The telephone companies are not about to undertake massive upgrades of their local loop technology to support new high-capacity services. For either the corporate remote access or consumer markets, the telcos simply do not feel either pulled by customer demand or pushed by effective competition to initiate upgrades such as asymmetrical digital subscriber line (ADSL). Local loop technology will advance during this time, but not uniformly.
