THE MOVEMENT AWAY from emphasizing the use of statistical significance testing and toward emphasizing effect-size and replicability analyses has gained considerable momentum over the past several years. For example, recent excoriations include works by an American Psychology Association (APA) Division 5 president in his presidential address (Schmidt, 1996), by the president of the Southwestern Psychological Association (SWPA; also a former APA Division 5 president) in his SWPA presidential address (Kirk, 1996), and by a past president of the Association for Assessment in Counseling (Thompson, 1996, 1997).
