AMAN'S true character is revealed in adversity as much as in success. Football legend Sir Bobby Robson was the embodiment of that truth. During his long career in the game, he won international honours and a cabinet full of trophies, yet perhaps his crowning achievement was the extraordinary stoicism and courage he showed in the face of mortal illness.
Throughout his last years, he had been living on borrowed time, after being diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer in 2007. It was the fifth occasion in the past two decades that he had been afflicted by the disease, yet there was never the slightest hint of self-pity.
