WITH CHINESE CEDARWOOD oil readily available and underselling US varieties, at lest one Texas producer has begun running his mill at half capacity. Others may follow as the industry sees healthy demand but stagnant prices.
Another problem, harvesters note, is getting to the wood. Since cedarwood is not harvested exclusively for the oil, distillers must wait until farmers cut the trees down. One source of delay is the current hunting season in Fast Texas, which "sounds like there's a war going on," according to one producer. He goes on to say that with prices devalued, there is little incentive to stick his neck out, literally, to get more wood.
