NEW YORK -- The struggle to build profitability in the hair care category has prompted a number of changes in the way such products are marketed by suppliers and merchandised by retailers.
A number of established lines are being restaged with value-added formulations, while the makers of numerous new products are vying for shelf space by offering strong incentives to retailers.
Chain drug store executives see hair care as a key component in their efforts to increase sales of health and beauty aids. Many retailers are reworking planograms to emphasize the category's more profitable segments, especially coloring and repair treatments.
