More than 50 years after America's decisive victory in World War II, veterans like me are growing old. The memories of combat remain, but the ghosts that haunted so many of us through adulthood have faded. We have resolved the brutality, the lost innocence and the unimaginable that seemed commonplace in the netherworld where we fought for our lives.
Yet, inexplicably, the nation has not fully resolved its World War II experience. Instead of a national memorial dedicated to the memory of all the men and women who sacrificed to win a global conflict, we have individual shrines. One such shrine to failure is ...
