It's not every day that the chief executive of a company is discovered to be a crack addict. But when the company happens to be a hospitalan institution devoted to wellnessthe shock is especially great.
That is precisely the position that Long Island Jewish Medical Center finds itself in, one week after announcing that John Steel has resigned as executive director of the New Hyde Park-based institution that boasts 500 doctors.
In a memo to staff on Tuesday, LIJ noted that Mr. Steel, who had been on a leave of absence for several weeks "to focus on personal issues, had resigned in order "to focus on his recovery.
